Track List

When creating our digi-pack we also decided to create a lyric book as part of a extra edition to the album. The song list we come up with are songs that have been produced by other artists, therefore the lyrics are easily accessible.

The title of our album is called 'Uncovered' I came up with the idea of this title for the album as it emplifies the artists background, as due to the music video we are going to produce of Jordan Sparks, Battlefield. This title in particular In relation to the song gives the audience the idea that this is artist bearing all to them, and also gives the impression that the music on this CD is coming straight from her heart and there is truth and meaning behind every lyric. therefore presenting I feel our artist as being more authentic than other artists in the same category, therefore making her appeal more to her target audience, as they may feel that they can relate to her and the emotions she is expressing in her music.

1) The Rhythm of Night
2) Wide Awake
3) Battlefield
4) Man Down
5) All about tonight
6) Young
7) 22
8) Cheers
9) How Long Will I Love You
10) A Year Without Rain
11) If I was a Boy
12) No Air

Digi-Pak Plan

In order to create the digi-pck for my artist we needed to create a mood board this involved researching images off of the internet for images that were associated with our artist, we chose to select the artist Pixie Lott to be the main influence of our artist, as she is young, part of the pop genre and also has the style we want our artist to have.
I also selected colours which I think would best represent our artist which was a colour pallet consisting of pinks and whites. As these colours both have connotations to feminity and purity however in contrast with these colours I have chosen to make the colour of the CD in the digi-pack black as this I feel could suggest that beneath it all my artist has a very deep, serious side to her, this in relation to her family background of her dad leaving and having a unhappy childhood. Suggesting that the songs on album have a serious but also somber tone to them, maybe meaning there ballads, however it could be argues that by the CD being black it could be presenting that my artists dark and more daring side has come out in this album. As the colour black hints at a sense of mystery, this could mean that it is pulling her audience into listen to the CD and buy it as the songs on the digi-pack are unknown to them.

When constructing the mood board we placed these images on the sugar paper in order to express our artist profile, I.e. Her fashion, make-up, clothing and also we wanted to incorporate elements of the digi-pack on there, therefore I used a floral background that is identical to the one being used on the digi-pack and also images of ballet dancers as this is in relation to the music video we are going to create. Also adds to the artist background of ballet being her form of escapism from her unhappy life at home.

Group Digi-Pak Plan

Before we create our digi-pack we created a group mood board In which we all went off and researched images that we want our artist to represent or be perceived as, once we each found the images we wanted we decided to create a group mood board, on this mood board we did rough sketches of what we wanted our digi-pack to include. However due to us all having different ideas and views on what the digi-pack should like we are also each going to create our own mood boards, which will be used on our own individual digi-packs.

Green Screen Filming

Along with the Digi-pack analysis I have previously done, I have also filmed a presentation of the annotated presentation of Rihanna's Digi-pack 'LOUD'. In the presentation I talk about what the colours used in the album cover could connote and also what meaning this may condone that the songs on this album are about. I have also included how due to these colours, poses and all the general mise-en-scene could convey something about the artist. This is shown by her facial expressions, body language and also her hair colour.

By filming in front of the green screen this allows me to then upload and edit the video onto Final Cut Pro and place the images and presentation I am talking about behind me on the green screen.

Below is a brief example of how the green screen works and also previous films that it has been in such as Mary Poppins, it has also been used in the film Bed Knobs and Broomsticks.

History of the Music Video

I looked into previous music videos in order to get an idea for our music video which we have to create. I feel this will also give a better understanding of the conventions in which i will have to follow when creating my music video. By doing this research it has also gave me an insight into how music videos and also the themes that occur in them have changed over time. When looking into this i found the different types of colour that were used and how these have developed and changed along with technology, and how these in particular represent the genre. This has given me a insight into the type of colour pallet i will need to use when creating my music video for the genre pop.

During my research i found that music videos have been around since the 1920's however back then they were very simple and basic, this due to the lack of experience and technology. They also didn't have many editing techniques therefore most of the music videos were shot in one long take. During the music video it was normally just the artist preforming their song live. The whole idea of the music video developed from films and short films, this shows how the media industry has developed.

The oldest and most popular music video was Bob Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues, 1965. The main reason it was so popular was because it was something new and different to the previous music video's that had been made. The artist is this flips the lyrics to the song in sync with the lyrics, therefore conforming to Goodwin's theory with there being a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals.

In the 1970's artist were promoted better in their music videos. in 1975 Bohemian Rhapsody, by queen was one of the first music videos in which visuals along with effects were incorporated. However music videos were not as famous as they are today they would have only been shown in cinemas. However this music video in particular marked the change in the music video industry. From this TV channels where created, which record companies found were the best place to promote their artist.

Around the 1990's there was two new forms of music videos, the conventional, which consists of fast cut montage and the second one being the experimental music video which was non-represental of the artist. However music videos have changed and developed so much over the years due to the advance in technology.

The cinematography in music videos play a huge part into establishing the genre of the music video as well as creating an effect due to the movement of the camera and the different angles used. An example of how camera shots and angels create an effect to the music video is the close-up shots used on the artist create a more intimate feel for the audience as they are solely focused on the artists face and features.
The mise-en-scene for example the facial expressions and the wardrobe the artist is presented in also create a feel to the music video. Katy Perry's california Gilrs wardrobe suggests the song is going to be upbeat and happy and also relate to the pop genre, this is due to the bright colours used and also the shortage of clothing.

The editing process also used in the music videos also suggest the genre of the music video, If there are lots of fast paced edits, this suggests that the song/music video is upbeat, therefore can be associated with perhaps the pop and dance genre. However is there are lots of long takes and not as many cuts this could suggest that the song is perhaps a ballad.

The purpose of the music video is to create a buzz about the song and artist itself, its also used as a technique to promote the record label. Therefore used a persuasive technique to get the audience to buy the CD or album once it has been released. However recently CD and album sales have decreased due to people illegally downloading their music via the internet and apps on the iPhone such as 'Free Music Download'. Furthermore technology has changed as people are no longer going into shops to buy the CD or album but are instead downloading them off their iPad, iPhones and androids.

Dave Meyers

Dave Meyers

Dave Meyers born Berkeley, California, USA. He is a music video and film director, active since 1997. David Meyers has directed numerous of famous music videos such as Pink’s There you go, Most girls and So What. Meyers has also worked alongside many other famous artists such as Shakira, Hilary Duff and Jay-z.
Meyers won a Grammy award in 2005 for the music video he produced for Pink’s “Get the party started” the award fell under the category of best short form music video.

Meyers enrolled into Loyola Marymount university after his graduation from Berkeley high school in California. From this he required a degree in film production and philosophy. He then worked his way through the studio systems at Paramount and Fox, before filming his first music video with rap crew The Whoridas. Other work apart from this such as his production of Missy Elliot's “Work It” won the MTV video music award for best video of the year in 2003. Meyers has also worked alongside famous directors such as Michael Bay who he helped remake the film The Hitcher in 2007.

Music Videos By Dave Meyers

These are some of the music videos directed by Dave Meyers, If you notice most of the music videos he creates come under the pop genre. Some of these music videos also seem quiet up beat songs. (If you click onto each image it will direct you to view the music videos themselves). For the upbeat pop songs Meyer uses very bright colours with lost of fast pace editing, whereas with the music video to Hilary Duff's come clean the mood of the song is sad, therefore Meyer has used quiet dull colours such as greys etc. To
portray the atmosphere and set the mood. He has also used
the weather i.e. the rain, as a technique to foreshadow the
perhaps depressing narrative of the music video.

Videos

David Meyer also directed the film the Hitcher in 2007, The Foolish 1999 and The Human Highway 1982. Below is the trailer for the film The Human Highway.
This trailer in particular involves lot of fast paced editing, therefore going with the stereo-type of the genre, comedy. As it keeps the audience interested and also excited to see what happens next. (Click on images below to view movie trailers)

Trade Mark

David Meyers trade mark seems to be when making upbeat music pop videos, he uses fast cut editing in order to create a fast pace exciting atmosphere for the audience, so they are intrigued to see what happens next in the narrative. These music videos also tend to follow Goodwin's analysis as there tends to be a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, this most poignantly shows in Fireworks by Katy Perry as every time the lyric "Baby, you're a firework Come on let your colours burst an image of a firework exploding in the air is shown.

However when he is directing a sad narrative he tends to use a small colour pallet consisting of blacks, greys and whites, this mostly shown in Hilary Duff's music video Come Clean. He also uses long shots in contrast to his usual fast pace editing as this sets the almost depressing atmosphere for the audience and furthermore creates a serious mood, to the lyrics being sung.

Analysis of Katy Perry Firework

Meyer uses a wide establishing shot to present to the audience the location in which the music video has been filmed in, this image also informs the audience that the video was shot at night, therefore due to the title being 'Firework' it could suggest that it is being set on the british celebration of Firework Night.

The use of this shot presents the audience with the narrative of the music video, as we establish the idea that the boy is unhappy in his home, due to his parents constant arguing, which could perhaps be centered around him, therefore he feels he needs to leave. Goodwins theory is applied here as Katy sings "Do you ever feel so paper thin like a house of cards one blow from caving in." Therefore this may have a relationship with the visuals as it establishes what the boy is thinking and the adds to the idea that he wants to get out of the family home, as he feels he has nearly reached his limit of tolerance to his parents unhappy marriage.

The Fireworks and also the sparks used in this music video, I think portray the inner strength in which these characters in the music video find in order to break out or overcome their demons.
This is show for all of the characters in the images below.

However when the lyrics are negative towards the person for instance the lyrics "Waste of space" Meyer uses again his dull colour pallet to express, the serious tone behind the lyrics. Creating a sombre mood for the visuals.

Intrestingly the use of the sparks could suggest new beginnings for the cast in the music video, this is indicated by the sparks used when the woman is giving birth to new life, this also adds to the idea that the sparks are symbolic of the characters overcoming something, as the woman is overcoming the fear and mental ability of giving birth, to be left with a happier and beautiful outcome. Perhaps this is a symbol of hope for the characters in the video, as it suggests that once they have broke free there is a positive and much happier outcome for them in the end.

Furthermore by Meyer choosing to use this close-up shot of the artist, it portrays the colour change in her hair, the purple. Connotations of the colour purple are strength, therefore perhaps suggesting that the characters have now found their inner strength.
In the music video Meyer has used a high angle shot to represent how the people have found their inner strength, this is portrayed through the positioning of them forming a firework like figure, suggesting how each individual is strong and has overcome something, maybe even portraying how they have come together as a community as they have been able to bond over their challenges in life.

Audience Profile

audience profile from hayleyboylex

Today we discussed in our group the target audience for our artist and also who our artist is influenced by, some perfect examples of who we want our artist to be alike is Pixie Lott and Ellie Goulding. We also discussed the age group that our artist will appeal to which we agreed would be teenage girls, as our artist is still a teenager herself at the age of 19. Furthermore the music our artist is creating can relate to teenage girls as it i based around heartache and boys and also relationships and as a teenager these things seem to be exaggerated and dramatised, therefor young teenage girls may seek to listen to this music when they are feeling down or if they have recently occurred a break-up.
